The most spectacular derailment I have witnessed and photographed happened on April 21, 1990. Santa Fe 2862 east, with SF 2849, EMD 764 (Ex-Conrail) and 6371 ran into the back end of another stopped eastbound at Mountainair, NM. The oncoming westbound train had trailers ripped opened by derailed cars fouling the main. It was quite a mess on this April 21st, 1990 afternoon.
Rick Doughty (64) I have been photographing trains since 1975. My favorite railroad is the Denver & Rio Grande Western. My photos have been featured in CTC Board, Railfan & Railroad, Railroads Illustrated, many railroad book and motive power annuals. I also enjoy severe weather photography and storm chasing. I play drums for my local church. I live in southern Idaho with my wonderful wife Stacey, who enjoys going with me on train watching adventures.
