A Little Luck At Lily

A Little Luck At Lily

After meeting C887 (bound for Gary, Indiana) B241 is now rolling through the home stretch towards Corbin where it will have all 3 of its units refueled for the journey south. Leading the charge is Canadian National heritage unit 3115, painted for BC Rail. Forget another railroad, this one is taking us out of the country, making it that much more unusual to see on former L&N trackage, displayed by the old searchlights here at Lily. This is the closest thing to British Columbia that you will ever see in the Bluegrass State.

A Different Kind Of Heritage

CN 3115, painted for BC Rail, leads a rerouted B241 into the yard in Corbin, Ky, and past the old L&N Depot. The heavy rain had now slowed to a drizzle as we stood on the old station platform. The BC Rail is the farthest thing from the scene of an old L&N passenger train rolling in here in the 50's, though the red, white, and blue scheme does resemble that classic "'Murica!" feel. Out of sight on the other end of the depot is L&N 2132, the only remaining L&N-built steam locomotive to exist. Funny enough, the day marked the 7-year anniversary of its dedication here in this very spot. Who knew that 7 years from that moment, we would be standing at the depot awaiting our train.

After getting held up north for a bit, CSX B241-20 made its way into south Georgia with CN 3115, the BC Rail heritage unit, leading the loaded potash train south. This one sure drew out the crowd today, and for good reason. CN 3115 is painted in the same form that BC Rail used to paint their MLW M420 units after going to the red, white and blue paint scheme. This is also the first of the CN heritage units that has made it this far south. These loaded potash trains typically come from CN but will occasionally come off the CP as well. In this case, the train arrived in Chicago as CN B746

The train that brought people in droves to the Bluegrass state, B241-20 with CN 3115 leading, exits the tunnel at Sinks and rolls by an abandoned limestone quarry, on its trek to Corbin for a crew change, and later Tampa.

Photos taken on April 15th, 2022. After getting word of a BCRail Heritage locomotive on its way. My brother and I ventured to Shelburn, Indiana to catch this heritage locomotive. I remember barely catching this unit as it was in Vincennes at the time when leaving Palestine, so thoughts of catching it were slim, but it managed to be done.
