MILLIE AT THE SAND TOWER

As part of the East Broad Top Railroad's 2022 Winter Spectacular, a night photo session was offered and a cold EBT #12 aka "Millie" was the star of the shoot. Here the locomotive and crew members pose by the sand tower inside the Rockhill Furnace shop and yard complex. Lighting was provided by Christopher Pollock, Steve Barry and Michael Burkhart. The smoke and steam effects were applied to the locomotive via smoke sticks. East Broad Top Railroad #12 was the first and smallest mikado locomotive (2-8-2) to enter the EBT's roster. Millie, as she was named in 1960 by owner Nick Kovalchick after his daughter, was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia in 1911 and was capable of hauling 15 loaded hoppers from the coal mines.

CONRAIL 243880

Conrail 243880 class X67 86 foot long boxcar was built in 1970 for the transportation of automobile parts between assembly plants. It was donated by CSX to the Conrail Historical Society in 2020 and was moved by truck to Shippensburg, PA in late 2021 where it was then repainted in its original color. The interior of the car will be transformed into a 10,467 cubic foot climate-controlled Conrail Museum & Archive that will be accessible to families and researchers alike. The boxcar was placed in February, 2022 near the Cumberland Valley Railroad Museum (CVRM), which is housed in a restored Penn Central boxcar at the Shippensburg trailhead of the Cumberland Valley Rail-Trail. www.thecrhs.org/243880

STEAM INTO HISTORY

NEW FREEDOM, PA - The "William H. Simpson" York #17 is a faithful replica of a Civil War era 4-4-0 steam locomotive. In 1863, a locomotive of this type pulled President Abraham Lincoln's train from Baltimore along this line to Hanover Junction roughly 10 miles to the North where he transferred onto another train and head West to Gettysburg to deliver his now famous seven minute address commemorating the new cemetery where thousands from that summer's battle had perished. The locomotive is named in honored of Mr. Simpson who was a driving force behind the creation of Steam Into History, the company that runs the excursions between New Freedom and Hanover Junction. He died in May, 2012 not having seen his vision come to life. Lighting provided by Sean R. Hoyden

IDLE AT CUMBERLAND

Western Maryland Railway 7471 sits idling and awaits for it's crew to board at Cumberland and take it and its train to Connellsville. Actually it was 2012 and the engine had recently been shipped "home" after repainted into its former WM glory for use on the George's Creek Railroad. On this night a few friends and I with permission from the railroad did a mini night shoot at the Cumberland station

LILLY DREAMSCAPE

LILLY DREAMSCAPE

I had done this shot a handful of times and there is no denying how awesome it is as the signals sat at the east end of a long straightaway and the headlights of approaching trains or westward rear helpers absolutely does their magic. It's 2am and it's absolutely pouring down rain. I'm in my makeshift trash bag turned poncho while the camera is housed in a white shopping bag. Along comes a set of helpers on track 3 going west and wallah! The closeness of the track to some of the branches helps as they create shadows in the light the further the engines move away.

MARTINSBURG STATION

MARTINSBURG STATION

Q372 with a single leader rushes by the Martinsburg, WV Station and Roundhouse Complex on Saturday, Sept 26, 2020. The platform on the east side of track one was just completed and this was a bucket list shot of mine when it was first announced a few years ago. Berkeley Hotel, the brick structure on the left dates to the railroad's arrival in 1842 & saw witness to the destruction of the the adjacent roundhouses by Stonewall Jackson in 1862. The B&O bought the building in 1866, expanded it, and used it as the station, eating house, telegraph office, and hotel. In 1877 the trainmen and enginemen here struck to protest wage cuts, starting the “Great Strike of 1877” nationwide. Railroad and military officials suppressed the strike here, using this building as headquarters.
