Running several hours off schedule for the third time in the past week due to equipment issues in Chicago, Amtrak No. 50 (P050 on CSX), the eastbound "Cardinal", leaves the skyline of the Queen City of Cincinnati behind as it heads east on the former C&O mainline in Newport, Kentucky.

An empty I&O Melvin Stone Train makes a sprint across CSX trackage as train Z896-29, heading for the I&O's Midland Sub behind three SD40-2's as they cross the Mill Creek Bridge at Winton Place interlocking in Spring Grove Village.

Running over four hours late, Amtrak No. 50, the eastbound "Cardinal", approaches the former C&O Ohio River Bridge as it departs the Buckeye State of Ohio and the City of Cincinnati for the Bluegrass State of Kentucky.

I&O transfer job Z880-01 is reflected in the calm waters of the Mill Creek and it rolls northbound through Winton Place interlocking just north of Cincinnati on CSX trackage with the IORY 5016 as the sole power. 5016 (ex-UTAH and Hamersley Iron 6063) is one of two Australian-built EMD SD50S units on the I&O roster, with the other being IORY 5017 (ex-UTAH and Hamersley Iron 6064).

Running about 4 hours behind schedule, Amtrak Train No. 50, the eastbound "Cardinal", makes its way along the old Cincinnati Union Terminal Southeast Connector (today part of the CSX Cincinnati Terminal Subdivision), heading towards CT Junction and the Ohio River Bridge as it passes over the Global Shipping Company building on Mehring Way below.
