Description

New York, NY - West 4th Street - 12/16/23 - The MTA brought out their fleet of classic R1/9 this holiday season for some special runs on the IND. Consisting of eight cars from the 1930s, the Holiday Nostalgia Train is a charming reminder of New York City’s transit history. These vintage cars were once the pride of the first subway company operated by the City of New York. Modern for their time, the R1/9s complimented the IND’s Depression-Era Art Deco aesthetic. They entered service on the Eighth Avenue line (today’s A/C/E) in 1932 and ran until 1977. Today, they are preserved as part of the New York Transit Museum’s collection. American Car and Foundry Company R1 #100 (1930/31) is the lead motor in this shot as the train enters the West 4th street station in Manhattan on the IND 6th Avenue line.

I like to combine my interest in photography and railroads. I try to not just take another train photo, but a photo that tells a story and makes the viewer feel like they are in the scene. To me, the train is just part of the picture and the story.
