Flying over Skyline

The mid train helpers that get added at Helena are seen flying over Austin Creek Trestle at Skyline, Montana, on September 15, 2021. With the MRL being absorbed into BNSF it is unknown how much longer an incredible scene like this will continue.

Sunset over Rockville

Sunset over Rockville

Sunset on the Rockville. Recently I have found myself photographing more of the shortline railroading around the country. Usually you are relegated to working with the weather or lighting that occurs when that operation has their 1x per week move, but when you spend any time at the well known Rockville bridge outside of Norfolk Southern's hub in Enola, PA you can expect ample moves and opportunities. This fall evening found an eastbound container train drifting across the bridge after making its trip down the Pittsburg line. The timing provided a perfect opportunity for a soft sunset and silhouette as it continued its journey into the evening.

Although the sun was fairly reclusive during a recent visit to the East Broad Top Railroad I did manage to get one shot where it decided to show up. In fall splendor, the #16 chuffs a combo freight and passenger train past the Aughwick creek as it heads back towards Rockhill, PA. The EBT is a true time capsule and this was a rare opportunity to capture a wide, scenic view of this narrow gauge steam operation just as it looked since it was built here in the 1870s.

The 1225 hustles a Lerro charter across Mid Michigan on a bitter cold January morning in 2019. As I watched this impressive machine thunder across frost covered farm fields I couldn't help but think that this was once a common, everyday occurrence.

Sunrise at Horseshoe

It was a busy morning at horseshoe curve this past fall as the sun has just risen high enough to ignite the spectacular fall colors that were still hanging. In fortunate timing the head end of a manifest freight grinds its way up grade past the helpers of an eastbound loaded coal train hold back the tonnage going down towards Altoona.
